Replay Defenses for IP-to-IP Transfers
Build replay defenses for IP-to-IP rails using nonces, skew windows, and idempotency keys that stop duplicate credits after reconnect and retry storms.

Retries without replays
IP-to-IP rails reconnect, time out, and retry. Without replay protection, a legitimate retry becomes a second credit. Defenses combine idempotency keys, signed timestamps, nonce caches, and strict skew windows—not IP allowlists alone.
This article complements banking idempotency with network-facing controls for Protocol 101.1 nodes. globalserverbank is not a licensed bank and is not affiliated with Visa.
Interface-level replay requirements are typically published with Global Server Protocol profiles.
Layered controls that work together
Require a unique idempotency key per business instruction and reject payload mutations under a reused key. Bind keys to institutional identity from mTLS. Add a signed timestamp accepted only inside a configured skew window—see clock skew and NTP.
Maintain a nonce or key TTL cache long enough to cover maximum retry age plus clock skew. Evicting too early re-opens replay; keeping forever grows storage without bound—document the trade.
Pair with Protocol 101.1 error codes and retry so uncertain timeouts query status instead of minting new keys.
Hot-path storage and hosting
Idempotency and nonce stores must be highly available in the same failure domain as acceptance. Deploy them on resilient cloud banking servers with clear RPO for the dedup store—losing the cache can be as dangerous as losing the ledger for duplicate risk.
Load-test reconnect storms: thousands of clients retrying after a blip should hit cache hits, not double posts.
What replay defense does not prove
Stopping duplicates does not prove beneficiary correctness, sanctions clearance, or settlement finality. Continue through Protocol 201.3 controls.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rely on TCP sequence numbers for replay defense?
No. Application-level keys and signed freshness are required once messages cross queues, proxies, or store-and-forward hops.
Should a retry use a new idempotency key?
No. Retries of the same business instruction must reuse the original key; new keys are for new business intents.
Does globalserverbank guarantee zero duplicates?
No. It documents patterns; institutions implement and test their own controls.
